CINCINNATI - After five months of debate, the Anderson Township Zoning Appeals Board has decided to allow underground limestone mining at Broadwell and Round Bottom roads.
The proposal passed 3-2.
Two of the biggest issues over the proposal from Martin Marietta Materials were about the underground blasting, and the 250 trucks a day it plans to have taking limestone out of the mine.
Martin Marietta says it will have explosives on site for blasting 400 to 800 feet underground, which is why it is asking for zoning permits and variances to allow the mine to operate.
Opponents had argued blasting associated with the mine would hurt their property values and pose health risks.
Supporters say the mine will bring new revenue and taxes to the community.
Residents upset with the final decision plan to appeal. They have 30 days to file the paperwork.
