CINCINNATI - Children filled the hallways at St. Francis De Sales school Monday morning.
The cafeteria echoed with the chatter of eager students ready for Christmas break, and anxiously counting down the days until Santa comes. And that's exactly how Principal Dr. Bill Schula hoped Monday would be: normal.
But just as Schula wanted the day to be normal, he also found it important to take a moment to remember those lost during the Newtown school tragedy.
He addressed students and staff during the usual morning announcements.
"There was serious tragedy at an elementary school in Connecticut, Sandy Hook Elementary School. So at this time we pray for all the children, the parents, the community, let's take a moment of silence please," said Schula.
The students, ranging in grades K-8, were reminded of the safety procedures already in place at the school in Walnut Hills.
"All the doors in the building are locked, they remain locked, please do not open the doors for any individuals. Visitors must come to the front door of the building. Your safety and our school community's safety is of number one importance," said Schula.
Teachers also reviewed the crisis plan with students.
Steve Vockell teaches 7th grade at the school. He reminded students where they were supposed to go in case of an emergency.
"This is just like how we prepare for a fire drill, or tornado drill, there's things we do to make sure we're prepared if something happens. Hopefully it never does, but we do have a plan," said Vockell.
And then the school day started, with a prayer that's said every morning at St. Francis De Sales. But Monday, the words seemed to mean a little more.
Students recited the prayer in unison: "We, the community of St. Francis De Sales, hope to live in homes, communities and a world that is peaceful."
Schula says right now, the school is taking a closer look at its crisis plan.
In the meantime, he's brainstorming ways the students can help those at Sandy Hook Elementary School, saying it could be something as simple as sending cards.
