ST. BERNARD, Ohio - A Hamilton County Grand Jury will decide if criminal charges are warranted in Tuesday’s shooting death of a Spring Grove Village man in St. Bernard.
Police said Jeremy Pierce Hibbett of Flatt Terrace was shot once in the chest during a domestic argument outside a home in the 4200 block of Vine Street.
Investigators said the shooter was a 60-year-old man, who was questioned, not charged and then released pending the outcome of the grand jury hearing.
St. Bernard Police Lt. Bill Ungruhe said Hibbett went to the house to reclaim property he said he owned.
Hibbett had once dated the daughter of the shooter’s wife.
“Witnesses said these two gentlemen had been arguing. It was getting pretty heated,” Lt. Ungruhe said. “The shooter in this case went into the house, got a handgun – a .38 revolver which we did recover – and took one shot at the 20-year-old.”
The shooter told WCPO-TV that Hibbett was “not supposed to be there” and that the incident “certainly did not have to happen.” The man said Hibbett had been removed from the house two times by St. Bernard Police.
“We’ve been to that address earlier on other occasions due to normally domestic disputes and alcohol-related offenses,” said Lt. Ungruhe. “So, they’re known to us.”
Lt. Ungruhe said the case “appears to be as manslaughter situation.”
“There are some people that are throwing out self-defense, but I’m not at liberty to go into all those facts,” he added. “That’s all being reviewed right now in very close detail by the Hamilton County Prosecutor’s Office.”
