CINCINNATI - The Freedom Center is offering $5 admission today during a communitywide celebration of the 150th anniversary of Cincinnati's Black Brigade.
The museum will have Black Brigade artifacts on display, including the Black Brigade flag from the Ohio Historical Society.
In 1862, more than 700 African-American men stepped in and volunteered their services to help protect Cincinnati during the Civil War. That group came to be known as the Black Brigade.
There will be a brief commemorative event held at 5:30 p.m. at the Black Brigade Monument at the intersection of Joe Nuxhall Way and Mehring Way.
Following the ceremony, the Cincinnati Pops will host a concert at Smale Riverfront Park's Schmidlapp Event Lawn at 7 p.m.
The museum is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The ceremony and concerts are free.
