CINCINNATI - Up to two dozen University of Cincinnati employees could lose their jobs come July 1.

The layoffs would be a result of an effort to balance the budget for the upcoming fiscal year, which begins July 1.

All UC departments that receive money from the general fund will have to cut their budgets by 8 percent.

The university received $28 million in state funding resulting from a federal stimulus gift.  That $28 million will disappear at the end of the year, thus leaving the university with a $28 million gap.  The Board of Trustees has set aside $14 million to counteract the gap, but layoffs look imminent.

A UC spokesperson says that 120 people were laid off last year and that the university will try to avoid the 24 layoffs, but it seems impossible.

The Board of Trustees meets Tuesday to approve a spending plan.
