Mich. police officer shot, killed in standoff near Detroit

WEST BLOOMFIELD, Mich. - A gunman shot and killed a Michigan police officer in a town near Detroit Sunday.

The shooting occurred in West Bloomfield, Mich. — a town about 30 miles northwest of Detroit.

Sources say five officers responded to shots fired during a domestic situation around 10 p.m. Sunday. Family member reportedly left the home on Forest Edge Lane near Pontiac Trail and Halsted and called police, according to WXYZ, our Scripps station in Detroit.

When they entered the home, police say the suspect appeared at the top of the stairs with a rifle.

One officer was struck in the neck and he was taken to McLaren Hospital in Pontiac where he later died. He was later identified as Patrick O'Rourke, a 12-year veteran of the force and a father of four.

O'Rourke is the first West Bloomfield officer to be killed in the line of duty.

Additional officers suffered injuries. Officers retreated from the home. Police say only the gunman remains in the home. He is firing shots at robots officers are sending in.

Some residents of Forest Edge Lane have been evacuated to the Township Hall.

The Michigan State Police Bomb Squad, SWAT and the Oakland County Sheriff's Department are on the scene.
