Man charged with plotting copycat movie theater shooting at Missouri 'Twilight' screening

BOLIVAR, Mo. - Police foiled a plot to shoot up a movie theater in Bolivar, Mo., after a tip from the suspect's mother.

According to Scripps station KHSB in Kansas City, Blaec Lammers, 20, was charged Friday with three felonies: first-degree assault, armed criminal action and making a terrorist threat. He allegedly purchased firearms to use in a mass shooting that would end at a local Walmart, where he could supplement his ammunition supply.

According to a probable cause statement from Bolivar Police, officers were alerted that Lammers had recently gone off his medication and purchased two assault type rifles on Nov. 15.

His mother told police the guns he purchased were similar to those used in the Aurora, Colo., theater shooting, and she was worried her son might be planning a copycat shooting at the opening of the Twilight movie.

When questioned by police Thursday, Lammers initially said he purchased the guns to go hunting. After an officer mentioned recent shootings in the news, Lammers said he had a lot in common with the people involved in those incidents, according to the probable cause:

"Blaec Lammers stated that he was quiet, kind of a loner, had recently purchased firearms and didn't tell anyone about it, and had homicidal thoughts."

The suspect then admitted he had bought tickets to see the new Twilight movie on Nov. 18, and he was planning to shoot people at the theater that night. But when he realized he might run out of ammunition, Lammers told officers he decided instead to go shoot people at the Walmart store in Bolivar. The probable cause detailed his confessed plan:

"Blaec Lammers stated that he would walk into the store and just start shooting people at random, and if he ran out of ammunition (he said he purchased 400 rounds) he would just break the glass where the ammunition is being stored and get some more and keep on shooting until police arrived."

He purchased two guns earlier in the week and practiced using them Tuesday. He said he had never shot a gun before and wanted to see how they worked, according to the probable cause.

Lammers is being held at the Polk County Jail on a $500,000 cash bond.
