Interns at Facebook are making more than many Americans do in their everyday jobs.

Business Insider reports that Facebook pays its interns more $5,600 a month, which adds up to about $67,000 a year.

The average salary of an American worker is $42,796, nearly $25,000 less than that, according to the Social Security Administration.

Taking an internship used to be associated with unpaid, chore work but that notion is changing .

Other big name companies, like MTV and Google, are heartily paying their interns. A Glassdoor report shows the highest paying internships of 2012.
