GREENWOOD, Ind. - A man who broke into a Greenwood woman's apartment and repeatedly raped her, threatening to rape and kill her children, has been sentenced to 270 years in prison.
Shawn L. Corbally, 33, of Indianapolis, was convicted last month of rape, burglary, two criminal confinement counts and four counts of criminal deviate conduct in the March 18, 2012, attack.
At Monday's sentencing hearing, the judge called the facts of the case malicious and disturbing and the evidence against Corbally "overwhelming."
In a statement from the victim read out loud by the judge, the woman called Corbally a "shame to humanity," and said she would pray that he rots in hell.
"I get to live my life with my children and family and experience so much joy and love. I am satisfied knowing you will never procreate or have any happiness," the woman wrote. "You do not deserve to feel love or comfort or security. I hope you get tortured every day for the rest of your pathetic life by those who hate the ground you walk on."
The woman told police she was asleep with her 1-year-old daughter when she awoke to a man's hand over her mouth and a knife held to her throat.
After cutting her underwear off with the knife, Corbally raped the woman repeatedly over the next hour, moving her from the bedroom to the bathroom and outside onto the apartment's back patio, according to the probable cause affidavit.
During the assault, Corbally told the woman that he was going to kill her and her children, rape her 1-year-old daughter and cut up her 9-year-old son, who was sleeping nearby, according to the affidavit.
After the final attack, Corbally grabbed the woman, who was naked, by the hair and dragged her back behind the apartments, telling her he wanted her to perform a sex act on him before he would let her go, according to the affidavit.
That's when a man walking along an exercise trail spotted the pair, prompting Corbally to let the woman go, telling her he would come back and kill her family if she called 911, according to the affidavit.
The woman said her assailant stopped her from looking at him, but she was able to give a basic description of his features and of two distinctive tattoos, which later led police to Corbally.
The woman identified Corbally as her attacker from a photo array, police said. He was also identified by neighbors who reported an attempted residential entry around the same time, police said.
Corbally has a previous rape conviction from 2000 that carried a sentence of 25 years.
