DAYTON, Ohio - The families of an Ohio couple shot in the Colorado theater shootings has released a statement through their attorney.

Couple Matt McQuinn and Samantha Yowler along with her brother, Nick Yowler, were in the theater when gunshots rang out. McQuinn was one of the 12 people killed in the shootings.

The following is a statement from the family's attorney Rob Scott:

"The McQuinn and Yowlers families would again like to thank everyone for their thoughts, prayers, and concern. Samantha Yowler was hit by a bullet in her knee from the shooting in Colorado. She is recovering from surgery and is expected to make a full recovery. Nick Yowler was unharmed during the incident. Unfortunately, Matt McQuinn perished from the injuries he sustained during the tragic events that unfolded in Denver, Colorado and went home to be with his maker. As both families mourn the loss of Matt, they ask for everyone to give them distance and time. Again, the families thank everyone for their love, prayers and ask that we respect their families' wishes."

Deadly tornadoes that have raked communities in Middle America over the past week, including Monday's massive twister that carved a path of destruction through the Oklahoma City suburb of Moore, belie what had been a relatively quiet start of the 2013 tornado season.
