Days after the Connecticut elementary school massacre, Dick's Sporting Goods says it's pulling certain types of semi-automatic rifles from its shelves nationwide.

The popular retailer provided CNN with a statement that said it plans to also remove guns from the store closest to Newtown, Conn., where a mass shooting happened last week.

On Dec. 14 gunman, Adam Lanza, shot and killed 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School then turned the gun on himself. Investigators said Lanza also shot and killed his mother at her home near the school.

One of the guns Lanza used in the school shooting was a high-powered rifle.

Some reports said investigators are also trying to determine if Lanza purchased a gun from a Dick's Sporting Goods store 12 miles away from Newtown in Danbury, Conn.

Dick's Sporting Goods said the decision came out of respect for the deceased victims and their families. It's unclear how long the store will keep the change in place.
