CHARDON, Ohio - Police are warning parents in Chardon, Ohio to beware of social media messages sent from strangers to their kids about the deadly shooting at their high school.

The Plain Dealer reports that people have been contacting Chardon Middle School students on Facebook about the recent shooting at the high school.

Three students died, and two were seriously injured on Feb. 27. Police say TJ Lane walked into the cafeteria and fired several shots at students sitting at a table. He was chased out of the school and taken into custody a short time later. He remains in jail.

Lt. Troy Duncan told the newspaper that police are investigating two incidents where people have contacted children through Facebook, though he did not discuss the nature of the comments.

Duncan said children need to tell their parents if strangers contact them on social media.

A school district spokeswoman said some attempted contacts may have been from news agencies around the world.
