OREGONIA, Ohio - A new race is bringing thrill-seeking runners to the Tri-State for an experience that’s sure to be both challenging and chilly.
The Arctic Dash — a 4.5K race scheduled for Dec. 8 at YMCA Camp Kern — will put runners through 15 obstacles including a hill climb, ravine run, hurdles, mud pits and optional swims through lakes and ponds. The race will integrate the activity areas around the 485-acre camp, located at 5291 St. Rt. 350 in Oregonia.
“This is our inaugural event, so we want people to come out and enjoy the event and have a good time and enjoy the obstacles,” said Arctic Dash Coordinator Chris Addison. “People will get a bit dirty and a bit wet and have some fun.”
The unique time of year for the race and natural obstacles aren’t the only things that make the event special, Addison said. The funds raised through the race will help send kids to Camp Kern’s summer programs. Camp Kern is part of the YMCA of Greater Dayton.
“There are a lot of kids in the area who can’t afford to pay the price of camp and with events like the Arctic Dash and Christmas tree sales, we are going to offset the cost and get scholarships so more kids can come out,” Addison said. “We want more kids to be able to come to camp and create lifelong memories.”
The cost of the race is $45 if runners register before Oct. 31. Runners will pay $60 to register after Oct. 31. Registration includes a t-shirt.
Although the race seems like a frigid experience, hot showers and warming stations will be available to warm the participants. For a closer look at the course, go to http://www.arcticdash.com/#!race-details/cp54 .
