Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth honored with International Freedom Conductor Award

CINCINNATI (AP) -- A late civil rights leader and a prominent journalist are the latest people to be honored for promoting freedom and human rights.
The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati says the Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth and journalist Nicholas Kristof will be the eighth and ninth recipients of its International Freedom Conductor Award.
Shuttlesworth endured beatings, arrests and a bombing in Birmingham, Ala. Shuttlesworth died in 2011 at age 89. He had lived in Cincinnati for nearly five decades.
New York Times columnist Kristof is a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner known for his writings on global child abuse, women's issues, injustice and genocide.
Previous honorees include the Dalai Lama and Rosa Parks. Awards will be given March 2.
