CINCINNATI - Veterans of the Afghanistan, Iraq and Persian Gulf War are now eligible to apply for benefits through Ohio's G.I. Bonus Program.

The Ohio Department of Veteran’s services created that program. Tuesday was the first of several informational sessions about the application process that will be held for veterans at the American Legion Hall Halker-Flege Post #69.

"It's important that we honor the men and women who risked the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedom," said Rep. Connie Pillich.

"We have worked for over two years to pass this legislation and make this day a reality and I look forward to working with the local veterans to help them understand the application process."

In 2009, Pillich introduced House Joint Resolution 1, which was passed with unanimous support and was approved by Ohio voters in May 2010.

Ohio has provided bonuses and benefits to veterans upon their return home dating back to the Civil War.
