CINCINNATI - Job applicants started lining up outside the Kohl's online distribution center as early as 7 a.m. on Tuesday morning even though the event did not start until 10 a.m.
"I come from Middletown and Middletown is struggling very hard," said Melissa Young. "There's no jobs out there. So to be standing in line is worth every dime to stand in line to get a job working here."
The store plans on hiring 1,200 seasonal workers for its local Monroe/Middletown e-commerce fulfillment center. Some of the hourly positions include preparing, processing and moving merchandise. The hiring event will run until 7 p.m. at the center at 3500 Salzman Road in Middletown. The interviews are on a first come, first serve basis.
Kohl's is hiring for all shifts, which are expected in start in October or November. Applicants must be at least 18 years old, and be able to lift 30 pounds. Prospective employees are asked to bring along a valid photo ID to the hiring event.
Marcia Durbin of Liberty Township has worked the seasonal position for the last two years and applied for a third time.
"The opportunity for the amount of money you can make is incredible. I really liked the work environment. I liked working here and the people I worked with, all my supervisors," said Durbin. "It was just a very relaxed comfortable atmosphere."
The starting wage is $9.50 an hour. The company said anyone who is interested in a seasonal position but is unable to attend on Tuesday can stop by the Kohl's fulfillment center facility on Salzman Road at a later date to fill out an application.
