CINCINNATI - The holidays are a hectic time for all, but most pet parents don't realize how dangerous this seasonal time of year can be for dogs and cats.
Dr. Lindsey Moore of Banfield Pet Hospital says there are several things pet owners need to be aware of.
Moore cautions it's very easy to lose pets when holiday guests arrive. That’s because doors can be left open, and pets can get scared and take off and run.
Those leftover turkey bones can be deadly to your animals.
"Most bones are very bad, but poultry bones especially," Moore said. "They splinter and as they go through the intestinal tract they can cause cuts to the intestines, which is a huge, huge medical problem."
You also need to watch out for your pets eating poisonous holiday decorations. Those include pumpkins, straw, poinsettias, holly and mistletoe.
Last but certainly not least, watch where you put any candles. They can burn your pet’s tail or even catch it on fire.
