CINCINNATI - Hamilton County Sheriff Si Leis says up to 500 beds could be closed at the county jail if no alternative is found to Hamilton County's current budget proposal.

The jail has 1,200 beds, so eliminating 500 beds would be a 41 percent reduction in capacity.

Hamilton County Sheriff spokesperson Steve Barnett says losing 500 beds is a "worst case scenario," and that hopefully a compromise can be found so smaller cuts, if any, will be required to balance the county's budget.
