MARIEMONT, Ohio - The Mariemont Police Department is sad to report the death of its beloved retired chief of police, Don Shanks.
Col. Shanks, a World War II veteran, passed away Friday morning at the age of 88. He served as chief of police in the Mariemont community for 33 years before retiring in 1987.
During his career, Shanks served as president of the Hamilton County Police Association and the Chiefs Association. Shanks also started the show “Police Call" that aired on Channel 9 for many years.
In addition to his service in uniform, Shanks continued his civil service after his retirement by serving a four-year stint as mayor of the Village of Mariemont. Shanks also gave back to the community by coaching in the Mariemont Recreation Association and started the school crossing guard program.
Visitation will be Tuesday, Oct. 9 from 6-8 p.m. at the Hodapp Funeral Home located on Vine Street in Carthage. Services will be held Wednesday Oct. 10 at 11 a.m. at the Parish Center located at 3908 Plainville Road.
Mariemont will have a police and fire motorcade Oct. 12 at approximately 10:15 a.m. The motorcade will start at the old Swallens lot on Red Bank Road and go throughout Mariemont.
