CINCINNATI - You can tell a lot by a person's body language.
Forensic psychologist Dr. Ken Manges told 9 News this after analyzing alleged shooter James Holmes' body language during his first court appearance Monday.
Manges is an expert in emotional and criminal matters and has testified in numerous cases across the United States.
Even though Holmes was there physically inside the courtroom Monday, Dr. Manges said it didn't seem like he was there emotionally.
"He had glances to either side, and had some raised eyebrows," Manges said. "It may have been he's been hearing voices. You can see here where he is rather dazed looking. He is not giving eye contact to the attorney or to the judge. His hands are in his lap his head is kind of askew."
Dr. Manges stresses that these signs don't always signify an unstable person.
He also advises the public to keep in mind, reading body language is a highly inexact science. It is often shaped by the environment we are in. Holmes was most assuredly in a tense environment Monday morning.
