GEORGETOWN, Ohio - The Brown County Animal Shelter says it is filled to capacity and if it cannot find homes for dogs the animals may have to be put down.
The dog warden says they have been bombarded with stray dogs in recent weeks and that has overwhelmed the shelter, filling it to capacity.
"We don't like putting a dog down period, but if we do we're going to do it right and humanely," said James Massie, Brown County Dog Warden.
Friday night the shelter located at 100 Veterans Boulevard was caring for between 50-60 dogs.
Massie said, "Some of the dogs we've had almost two months. We try to hold onto these dogs as long as we can. There's no use for us to put a dog down if it's healthy, non-aggressive, and perfectly adoptable. "
He said they have all kinds of breeds in the shelter.
"We feel it's a waste but unfortunately we knew this day was coming and unfortunately it's here. We have an urgent list and we're scheduled to to put nine dogs down on October 4th. "
Massie says people have been dumping dogs on the side of the road all over Brown County and others have been bringing them to the shelter for care. Now he needs to find people to adopt the animals. He thinks the tough economy may have something to do with the large increase in strays.
"We're trying to give the public and rescues as much time to get these dogs out and find them homes,"said Massie.
