CINCINNATI - Bus tokens are about to go the way of VHS tapes and 78 rpm records.

After being used for decades, Metro bus service is selling its last bus tokens on Dec. 31.

Metro’s current silver bus tokens are good for a one-way, $1.75 ride within Zone 1 (City of Cincinnati). Instead of tokens, Metro will begin selling a new 10-ride Zone 1 ticket.

“Our new fareboxes support new fare options that make riding Metro easier,” said Terry Garcia Crews, Metro’s CEO, in a prepared statement.  “Tokens are awkward to use.  Our new 10-ride tickets are much more convenient.”

Metro bus tokens will continue to be accepted on buses for six months, until June 30, 2013.  No cash refunds will be given for tokens.

Metro’s new 10-ride tickets are on sale now at Metro’s sales office, 120 E. Fourth St. in the Mercantile Building arcade, from 7 a.m.-5:30 p.m. weekdays.
