HILLSBORO, Ohio - The official who oversees the Hillsboro Police Department was arrested early Monday morning for allegedly driving while drunk.

Richard D. Giroux, Hillsboro’s safety and service director , was arrested by the Hillsboro Police Department at about 1:15 a.m.

Giroux, 51, was charged with operating a vehicle while impaired and failing to obey a traffic device.

Court records indicate that Giroux tested 0.188 on a Breathalizer. He was taken to the Highland County Justice Center for detention, and was arraigned Monday in Hillsboro Municipal Court. Records show he was released from custody after his arraignment.

“I spoke with Rick and understandably he feels very badly about the incident," said Hillsboro Mayor Drew Hastings. "Knowing Rick and his high standards of professionalism, I’m sure he regrets the mistake and any embarrassment to the city."

Hastings added, "I want to commend the Hillsboro Police Department for not treating Mr. Giroux any differently than anyone else in similar circumstances.”

Giroux was appointed to his current position in January 2012.

In his job, Giroux oversees multiple city departments including the police department, fire department, code enforcement office, wastewater utility, water utility, street department, parks and recreation, tax administration and information technology services.
