FAIRFAX, Ohio - Family and friends of the late Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth boarded a bus early Friday morning to head to Alabama for the funeral of the civil rights leader.
More than 20 people gathered at the Walmart on Red Bank Road in Fairfax to travel the eight hours to Birmingham, Ala. There are events taking place all weekend with the funeral on Monday.
"I anticipate a weekend of sorrow but yet a lot of joy and a lot of knowledge," said Ruby Bester, Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth's daughter.
Rev. Shuttlesworth passed away on Oct. 5 at 89 years old. More than 50 years he walked side by side along Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in the civil rights movement. Bester said his grandchildren and great grandchildren will be able to learn more about him with this weekend's events.
"I'm just glad that Daddy's up there now with his momma, his sister, and his two brothers. He was the oldest of nine and they were a very close family. I'm just happy that he is no longer in pain," said Bester. "We miss him."
