6 men indicted in shooting that injured 4-year-old last March

CINCINNATI - Six men were indicted in a Hamilton County courtroom in connection with a shooting that injured a 4-year-old boy last March in Avondale.

Four-year-old Khyren Landrum was shot in the buttocks by a single bullet as he walked home from the park with his sisters near the 800 block of Blair Avenue on March 20, 2012. Police say the child was caught in the cross fire of a drive-by shooting and was not the intended target.

Aiesha Landrum, Khyren's mother, told 9 On Your Side her son spent one month in a wheelchair and two months in a walker during his recovery. Landrum's legs still give out sometimes, especially when it's cold or wet outside, which is something his mother says he will have to deal with the rest of his life.

Rasheid Lattimore, 25, Shaquille Smith, 20, Masai Williams, 26, David Alexander, 26, Masai Torbert, 43 and Antonio Huff, 44, were indicted Thursday afternoon in connection with the shooting. All six were charged with two counts of felonious assault with gun specifications.

Five of the six are currently in custody on other charges. Police say Huff remains at large, but a task force is actively searching for him at this time. Anyone with information on Huff's whereabouts is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (513) 352-3040.

Police say Masai Torbet and Masai Williams are father and son, respectively. The relation of the other four indicted is not known, but police say all six are allegedly involved in gang-related activity.

"The Cincinnati Police Department would like to thank the U.S. Attorney for Southwest Ohio, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and especially the Hamilton County Prosecutor’s Office for their invaluable assistance in solving this case. Those who commit violent acts in our community should take note: All levels of law enforcement are working together to focus enforcement efforts on violent offenders," Cincinnati Police Chief James Craig stated in a press release.

Aiesha Landrum said her son was afraid to go outside after the incident, but he's now able to play in parks and is less afraid of sirens. In response to the news of the indictments, she told 9 On Your Side, "If it were up to me I hope they never see the daylight."

"I'm just happy that my son is here. He's not dead and that was messed up... He was just coming from the park. Kids can't even come outside and play at the park without a whole bunch of nonsense," she added.

Community leaders responded to the shooting last March by holding a street rally calling for a stop to violence.

No other details were released on the indictments at this time.
