CINCINNATI - It’s easy to get discouraged when you’re trying to get in shape, but setting realistic goals is a great way to stay on track, according to experts.

Fitness experts suggest a few ways to stay motivated during your weight loss journey — all of which have to do with setting goals.

Here are some of the tips from experts:

  • Set a specific goal- Set a detailed goal like lose ten pounds, drop a dress size or run a mile.
  • Make sure goals are realistic- Is this a goal you can achieve give constraints on your time? If reaching your goals requires five workouts a week, but you can only get a babysitter two days you week, you need to scale back your goal.
  • Find out how to best achieve your goal- Do you know how to reach your goal? For some, it may mean joining a gym or getting a personal trainer, while for others, it may just require you to lace up your walking shoes.
  • Set a timeline- Make sure there are benchmarks along the way to keep you honest and track your progress.
  • Tweak your goal- Life happens. If factors in your life change your workout routine, go with it. Can’t afford a gym? New baby limiting your work outs? Finding your goal too simple? Don’t be afraid to alter your goal to stay focused and realistic.
  • Reward yourself- Give yourself a reward once you reach your goal. Whether it’s buying yourself a magazine, taking a long bath or treating yourself to a new outfit, do something for you.
