A new year can mean a new diet for some of us. If you're trying to pick a diet that fits your lifestyle you may want to check out the latest rankings from U.S. News & World Reports who ranked the top diets of 2012.

The report ranks the Weight Watchers diet as the top diet for weight loss. The data finds that dieters had the best luck for short and long-term weight loss on Weight Watchers.

Weight Watchers scored a 3.7 out of 5 the "easy to follow" category.  It was followed by The Jenny Craig diet, which scored a 3.6 and Biggest Loser diet which scored a 2.9.

Twenty five diets were evaluated in the report. Of these, the five easiest to follow, according to the magazine, are:

1.  Weight Watchers

2.  Jenny Craig

3.  Mediterranean Diet

4 (Tie) Slim-Fast & Volumetrics

Best Diets 2012 features six other ranks:  Best diets overall, best commercial diet plans, best weight-loss diets, best diabetes diets, best heart-healthy diets, and best diets for healthy eating.

Some across the board winners: 

  • Dash Diet
  • Biggest Loser Diet
  • Weight Watchers
  • Ornish Diet

The diets were ranked by a panel of 22 experts that included nutritionists, cardiologists and dietitians.
