CINCINNATI - Federal guidelines recommend that high school students get nine hours of sleep per night, but how many teenagers do YOU know who really manage that? (Except on weekends, when they sleep till noon, right?)
Well, maybe we shouldn't worry so much. High school students may perform better on less sleep than experts originally thought.
New research from Brigham Young University finds that students score best on tests if they get seven hours of sleep, not the nine hours recommended.
Many experts do consider insufficient sleep a public health concern. Among children, it's associated with obesity and lower academic performance.
Bottom line: if you need nine hours of sleep a night, and you can get it, go for it!
