NEWPORT, Ky. - The best way to fight the flu, before it gets you is to get a flu shot.

And nobody knows that better than people who've had the flu, and those who have high-risk jobs.

Phonisia McPherson does everything she can to protect herself from germs. She's a Delta flight attendant, so she encounters lots of germs on the job.

"Oh yes, lots of coughing, sneezing, lots of children. They always seem to carry a little extra something-something for you," McPherson said.

So along with plenty of hand sanitizer and vitamins, the flu shot is part of her routine. She came to the Newport Target to get it.

"I'm just a little late this year getting it, but usually I do," she says.

Pharmacist Erin Janson says calls and drop-ins are on the rise. She knows from personal experience how miserable the flu is.

"I think it's good to know the flu is highly contagious. Untreated it's debilitating. The best treatment is to get the flu vaccination."

What if you hate needles?

"We actually have a new intradermal injection this year. It's really nice, tiny, just under the skin, not the muscle, so a lot less painful," said Janson.

And even that small amount of pain, is certainly worth the pain you'll avoid.
