CINCINNATI - If you've ever stood in line behind someone ordering a five-ingredient drink at Starbucks, it can be somewhat intimidating, especially if you don't understand what they've said.
The Huffington Post recently compiled a guide to Starbucks' secret menu items . If you don't know what an "Affogato Frappuccino" or "Dirty Chai" is, you might find this list useful.
With the more than 87,000 drink combinations Starbucks claims to have made over the years, chances are you haven't heard or tried everything the Seattle coffee chain has to offer.
So if you're looking to spice up your regular cup of joe, here are some different drink styles to consider. And if you already feel confident in your barista lingo, it may serve as good refresher.
Below is a list of different off the menu drink styles that could become your new favorites.
1. French press: Even though it's not advertised, Starbucks is willing to brew any coffee they sell in a French press if you ask.
2. Super Cream: Fan of whipped cream? If you ask for a "Super Cream" version of a frappe, they'll give you half a cup of whipped cream blended in the drink.
3. Affogato style: You can ask for any frappe "affogato-style", which means a shot of hot espresso is added on top of the drink instead of having it blended in.
4. Triple C's: This drink is a cinnamon dolce latte with caramel syrup and chocolate mocha syrup added.
5. Biscotti Frappuccino: Do you like DQ Blizzards? Ask your barista for the Starbucks version. If you're willing to purchase a package of biscotti cookies at the counter, your barista can blend the cookies into a frappe. However, not all locations make this drink. There is some debate as to whether or not employees are allowed to put cookies in the blender. But, it's worth a try.
6. Order it "short": Looking for a quick pick me up while on the go? If you don't have time to finish a whole drink or just want something smaller than a "tall" size drink, order your drink "short". It's also cheaper.
7. Captain Crunch Frappuccino: If Captain Crunch is your favorite cereal, then you and your barista cap'n can make it happen. Many say that the combination of hazelnut syrup mixed in a strawberries and creme frappuccino tastes just like the cereal.
8. Cake Batter Frappuccino: A combination of vanilla and almond syrup added to a vanilla frappuccino.
9. Chocolate Dalmatian: White chocolate mocha with java and chocolate chips mixed in.
10. Zebra Mocha: This is a white chocolate mocha mixed with regular mocha. You can also add raspberry flavoring to the combination for a "Red Tux" mocha.
11. Dirty Chai: A shot of espresso added to a regular chai latte, which can be served chilled or hot. For an "Extra Dirty Chai" ask for two shots of espresso.
12. Red Eye: A shot or two of espresso added to a regular cup of Joe.
