Going for gold: Cincinnati native wins big at national skydiving championships

ELOY, Ariz. - Cincinnati native Katrina Buckner won a gold medal in the 2-way formation skydiving event last week at the 2012 U.S. Parachute Association National Collegiate Parachuting Championships.
The oldest and biggest collegiate skydiving event in the world, the competition took place at Skydive Arizona south of Phoenix.
Buckner, 21, was among 100 collegiate skydivers from around the country.
She told WCPO.com that she and her partner Lauren Pruett decided to pair up just a day before the competition, and found themselves in lead after the first of three jumps.
"We're were pretty excited," Buckner said. "We really weren't expecting to win."
In formation skydiving, the team leaps from an aircraft more than two miles above the ground and then races against the clock to get into geometric formations in free-fall before opening their parachutes.
Buckner is a senior at the University of South Carolina, majoring in nursing. She has completed 115 skydives.
