FOREST PARK, Ohio - Our latest student of the week winner has given countless hours to volunteering in her community, but still manages to take college level classes in high school.
Emily Cleary is in the top three of her class at Winton Woods High School. Simply put, the senior loves to help people.
"I don't like to see people suffer or go through hardships. So anything I can do to help make their lives easier or just add some fun is the joy in my life," Cleary said.
Cleary has her hands full in and out of class. She's involved in theater and choir. She volunteers her time for students and at a local church.
"I don't try to be a leader, I just try to be someone that people can turn to, to ask questions for help in any class," Cleary said.
It's safe to say her teachers appreciate that.
"[Faculty and staff] couldn't be more proud. Emily is not only a great student but she's very self motivated. She's the kind of student who will represent us very well," said Dave Bell, the Fine Arts Director for the Winton Woods City School District.
Cleary spent time in Guatemala in a student exchange program. She even volunteered for a senior citizen handicapped prom.
Cleary says a quote from Mary Poppins sums up her attitude toward life.
"’Shoot for the moon! If you don't make it there, you'll land in the stars.' And to me that is just a true inspiration where even if you don't make it to your top point you'll make it very close," Cleary said.
Cleary has already been accepted to study pre-nursing at the University of Cincinnati. From there, she plan's on helping others through the “nurses without borders” program.
