CINCINNATI - Have you heard the term quiet leader?  That's how students and faculty describe this week's student of the week.

Matt McCormick is enjoying his last year of high school at St. Bernard-Elmwood Place.

"He's a very modest, positive leader," said Assistant Principal John Estep. "The students like to be around Matt."

McCormick is ranked No. 1 in his class.  He excels at cross country, and is always ready to help whenever asked by his classmates or teachers.  He participates in several committees to improve the school and the neighborhood.

"He puts other people ahead of himself, and he's always willing to do whatever it takes," Estep said. "He never gives up and I think some of the things he's been able to persevere would have been a real challenge for others in life."

It's not been an easy course for Matt.  He had to move in with his older sister to stay in the school he loves so much.  Something not lost on him after being nominated for Student of the Week.

"It's amazing that [teachers and staff] care so much to nominate me as Student of the Week," McCormick said. "I feel really proud that they would allow me to have this opportunity."

Estep nominated Matt, and was very excited to learn he was named student of the week.

"I just felt so proud," he said. "I had tears in my eyes. Kids like this, when you're in this field so long, are few and far between."

Matt plans on continuing his education at Northern Kentucky University.  He has some simple advice for younger students.

"Just work hard and see a bigger picture and just see yourself from where you are now, and what you could be later on," McCormick said.

Matt you keep doing what you're doing!  Congratulations on being our Student of the Week.
