INDIANAPOLIS - An Indianapolis father was arrested after an infant was found screaming in a hot SUV on the city's east side Monday, police said.

Officers were called to the 500 block of North Dequincy Street just after 4 p.m. on a report of a child left in an unattended vehicle.

Police removed the child from the car and knocked on doors until they found the parents.

Trevor Gaines, 28, who was supposed to be taking care of the child at the time, told police he didn't realize he'd left the baby in the SUV, according to the police report.

Temperatures reached 102 degrees in Indianapolis on Monday afternoon.

Gaines was arrested on a preliminary charge of neglect of a dependent.

Child Protective Services determined the child could remain with the mother during the investigation.

The police report did not specify if the infant was taken to a hospital.

Hours earlier on Monday, an Indianapolis woman was arrested after she left her 11-month-old daughter in a hot car while she shopped in Noblesville, police said.
