CINCINNATI - Friday's casino construction accident, that sent 13 workers to the hospital, could have been worse if it weren't for the Cincinnati Fire Department's Special Operations Unit.

"We had a paramedic with every engine company that showed up, every medic unit had a paramedic unit on it, so they had advanced life support all the way to the hospital yesterday, which is something new," said District Fire Chief Thomas Lakamp.

The Special Operations Unit was started one year ago. Friday's construction accident was the first time it was put to the test.

Fourteen fire companies and 10 medic units responded to the accident, which according to Lakamp, is about half of the city's emergency resources.

OSHA is still investigating the collapse of a section of flooring that fell 30 feet.

One man remains in serious condition.
