SEYMOUR, Ind. - A body found just off Interstate 65 in Jackson County on Wednesday afternoon is that of a man who police said was involved in a shootout with a state trooper earlier this week.
Indiana State Police confirmed that John Michael Fish was found dead of what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound in some woods near the area where authorities said the shootout happened.
ISP and other law enforcement agencies have been searching for Fish since Monday evening.
The shootout happened at the busy intersection of U.S. 50 and Interstate 65 in Seymour, about 60 miles south of Indianapolis.
The trooper had pulled a driver over and was approaching the vehicle when the man opened fire, police said.
The trooper was not hit. He fired back, but the driver ran from the scene, police said. Police don't think he was shot during the exchange of gunfire.
Fish was released from prison about six months ago after the 2003 armed robbery and confinement of his foster father. He was sentenced to 20 years but only served six for model behavior behind bars.
Fish's mother, who refused to give her name, told RTV6 earlier this week that her son didn't want to go back to prison.
"He said if he ever got stopped or anybody tried to send him back, he wanted to die, but he wasn't going back to prison," she said. "He wasn't trying to hurt anybody. He just knew that if he made a shot, they would shoot him."
