Tax prep is getting expensive these days.
But the good news is that just like an end of season sale on winter clothing, online tax preparation firms are starting to mark down their services as we get closer to April 15th.
A storefront preparer now averages $150 for a basic return, and even "do it yourself" programs can cost $80 to $100.
But the good news is you can file your taxes for much less, if you know where to look.
Sales Start Now
TurboTax, in an end-of-season sale, has just cut the price of its most popular online programs by $20, if you haven't purchased them yet. Click this link for details on this sale, or go to turbotax.intuit.com.
The price of TurboTax Deluxe, their most popular program, is now marked down from $49 to $29.
That matches the price H&R Block's At Home Deluxe program, which is also $29.
TaxAct once again this year offers a free filing program, though it does not have the same support as TurboTax or Block, according to reviewers.
To get these discounted prices, you need to access the programs online: TurboTax's CD-Rom version sold in stores is a higher price, though many retailers are now starting to put that on sale as well.
Also, remember that if you earn less than $57,000 a year, and have a simple return, you should be able to file free, through the IRS website ,www.irs.gov.
As always, don't waste your money.
