Are you planning to go grocery shopping soon? If so you may want to know what days typically see the lowest prices on food.

A new report in the San Francisco Chronicle says the best day for grocery shopping is Wednesday, typically the day the new sales flyer goes into effect.

That makes a lot of sense, because you will get that week's newest sales, and also will catch some of last week's sales as well.

The report says at most stores, from Walmart to many regional grocery chains, Wednesday is the best day to shop. That's when new sales begin. But there's a catch, if you are a Kroger shopper.

Kroger: Shop Sunday

It's different at Kroger: A Kroger spokeswoman tells 9 On Your Side its sales start on Sunday each week.  So if you want to grab the new sale prices, as well as some of last week's sales, visit Kroger on Sunday.

Sunday is also a great day to shop because Kroger managers are allowed to mark down perishables like milk and meat that did not sell well over the weekend with "managers specials" stickers.

For Freshness, Shop Tuesday

However, there is a big downside of shopping on Sunday.

Saturday is the biggest day of the week at most grocery stores, and Sunday shoppers often find shelves depleted of the most popular items.

In addition, stores rarely get deliveries on weekends: The produce, and fresh beef and seafood you buy on Sunday was usually delivered to the store on Thursday and Friday.

So it may not be the freshest.

If freshness is most important to you, the Knoxville News Sentinel says Tuesday and Wednesday are the best days to shop. Most deliveries come in at the beginning of the week, and are put on the shelves by Wednesday.

As always, don't waste your money.
