A coalition of consumer groups tonight is pushing for the recall of a popular baby seat.
Millions of parents have purchased the Bumbo infant seat over the past decade. But it's now blamed for dozens of falls, skull fractures, and even one death in the Tri State last year.
5 month old Colson O'Brien of Aurora Indiana drowned last summer, when his Bumbo baby seat toppled over in a kiddie swimming pool.
Bumbo seats -- made by a South African company -- have a warning to never use them on an elevated surface or in a pool. But consumer groups say thats not enough.
Dylan Lamm is one of dozens of babies who have been injured when their bumbo baby seat toppled over. The little boy has scars on his head from where he hit the kitchen floor, fracturing his skull.
"He had arched his back and tilted the Bumbo till it was in this position. The back folded and he toppled over backwards," his Dad explained.
After more than 100 reports of injuries, a coalition of consumer groups, including the Consumer Federation of America, Consumers Union, and US PIRG, are now asking the government to order a recall of all Bumbo baby seats.
The groups say the warning labels are ineffective, and say they have "grave concerns about the safety of this product."
The manufacturer continues to insist the seat is safe when used as directed, and that parents should never place a baby in it atop a table or in a tub or wading pool.
