CINCINNATI - With the return of summertime heat and fun, here's a few tips to remember to keep your pet safe.

Make sure you have plenty of water.  It doesn't take long on hot days for dehydration and heat stroke to set in.

Bring a dish to pour water into instead of trying to have them drink out of a water bottle.  Most of it ends up on the ground instead of rehydrating your dog.

Dogs do not sweat.  They cool themselves by panting and when you leave them standing out in the direct sun, it is very taxing on their bodies.  Just like you want to seek the shade on a hot, sunny day, so does your pet.

Never leave your pet in a locked car. It only takes a few minutes for the temperature inside the car to reach over 100 degrees and within 20 minutes, it can be up to 125F.  If your pet can't go where you are going, leave them at home where they will be safe.  Leaving a window cracked will not prevent your pet from being exposed to dangerous temperatures.

Don't allow your dog to ride in the back of a pick-up truck.  Bob Howard from the Stray Animal Adoption Program said, "they are like unsecured cargo and can be thrown from the vehicle at sudden stops".

Your dog also has an increased danger if they like to hang their head out of the window.  They have the chance of being harmed during sudden stops and can be hit by any flying debris.

When there is a threat for severe weather, make sure your plan includes your pet.

This week, we featured 2 Beagle/Australian Shepherd mix puppies that were available for adoption.  Dandelion (Dandy) and Duffy are 9 weeks old.  The brother and sister will be available for adoption at the Western Hills PetSmart or you can call 513-885-DOGS.  Three more of their litter mates along with other dogs, puppies, cats and kittens will be at the Florence PetSmart on Sunday.  You can also contact the Stray Animal Adoption Program .
