I’m not what you would call a movie buff, but I love the Oscars.
To me, that’s the same as not being a gourmet cook, but being obsessed with Food Network. I’m a sucker for Trisha’s Southern Kitchen.
Anyway, I figured as the Oscars draw near and we all start guessing who will take home what award, I’d consult some experts. So I sought out the guidance of the two people who watch more movies than anyone I know.
My kids.
Sure, they’re mostly on DVD, animated, rated G and/or contain copious amounts of bathroom humor, but they count.
So, let’s see who Annabelle and Elizabeth think should win the big Oscars this year.
Best Actor
A: Can Zach Efron win? (Yes, dear. And I like where you’re going with this.)
E: Bradley Cooper. Because our dog is named Cooper.
A: We learned about Abraham Lincoln in school.
Me: So do you think Daniel Day-Lewis will win?
A: No. Why?
Me: Nevermind.
E: It could be Joaquin (pronounced Joe-quinn) Phoenix. Because I was a phoenix for Halloween. (I like the thought process here.)
Best Actress
E: Definitely Jennifer Lawrence. Because she sounds like a good actress.
Me: You know, she's from Louisville.
E: Then maybe I can see her statue when she brings it home.
A: I say it's Emmanuelle … whatever. She’ll win because her name is fancy.
E: (after being told Quvenzhane Wallis is about her age). 9-year-olds are pretty dramatic. So maybe it’s her.
Best Picture
A: I think it’s ‘Amour.’ Because the name is fancy. (I’m detecting a theme …)
E: Maybe ‘Silver Linings Playbook.’ It sounds glittery.
A: Yes, sparkly. Like a book with silver glitter on it. That one will win.
E: No-‘Life of Pi’ might win. Especially if it’s about a pie that comes to life.
A: Why isn’t ‘Barbie The Princess and the Pop Star’ on the list? (Great question. Must have been an oversight.)
Best Animated Feature Film
This one’s right in their wheelhouse. And we have actual agreement on this one.
E and A: ‘Wreck-It Ralph.’
A: It will win because it’s pixelized. And I like stuff that’s pixelized. And also there was a lot of candy in it. Why isn’t ‘Barbie The Princess and the Pop Star’ on the list?
There you have it. Entertaining? Maybe. But I wouldn’t use their picks for betting purposes.
