The newsroom here at Channel 9 is all a twitter.
It’s not a breaking story, or a famous interview subject (though Sheila E is coming in today to be on 9 News at Noon!). No, our excitement is caffeine-based.
Let me start at the beginning.
The coffee here at 9 News is free. And that’s its best attribute. It is flavorful, if the flavors you desire in a cup of coffee are dishrag and metal.
But again, it’s free. So we’ve all been drinking it for years, without any real option otherwise.
Until this week.
I’m not sure why, but this was the week the 9 coffee drinkers united in their caffeine craving.
We pooled our money and bought a Keurig single serve coffee maker.
Is it excessive? Sure.
Expensive? Yes.
Delicious? Most definitely.
I became the point person. And oh the pressure. This is what I was preparing for with all those leadership classes in college.
I took up a collection, and as anyone who’s ever taken up money from co-workers knows, I fully expected to have to front one or more of my colleagues, who conveniently “forgot” their money.
No such luck. Everyone paid up, and quickly. Apparently coffee is the great aggregator.
So off I went to Kohl’s, armed with a 30 percent off coupon, sale prices and the promise of what was to come.
The next day, I felt like Santa Claus, bringing the new machine into the station. I was literally greeted at the entrance to the newsroom with claps and smiles as wearied overnight workers celebrated the beginning of something new.
We gathered around the Keurig, marveling at the new K-cup flavors we’d soon be trying. It brought people of all shifts, of all jobs together. There were hugs and smiles and pretty fitting for Thanksgiving.
And isn’t that what our forefathers really wanted?
From Today’s Show:
-Try-It-Out Everyday: Today’s test was Crate and Barrel’s Double Action Potato Masher. Should you pick it up before you make Thanksgiving dinner? See the review here .
-Hostess Shutdown: No more Twinkies, no more Ding Dongs (though I’ll always call them King Dons). More importantly, no more jobs for more than 18,000 workers nationally.
