It's Tuesday, May 10, 2011:

AN AMERICAN HISTORY LESSON: On this date in 1775, Ethan Allen and his Green Mountain Boys captured the British-held fortress at Ticonderoga. They were assisted by Colonel Benedict Arnold.

REDS 6 ASTROS 1: Travis Wood had a lead to work with because he's the one who provided it.  Wood hit a three run home run in the third inning, a pretty good poke. Ramon Hernandez had two-run shot in the fourth, giving the Reds a 5-0 advantage.  Wood pitched 6 2/3 innings of shutout baseball. He's had two strong outings in less than a week, both against Houston.

NOTABLES: Chris Valaika had two hits, Ryan Hanigan had three hits, and Mike Leake made his first appearance from the bullpen. He pitched a scoreless ninth inning.

DID YOU REALIZE? Drew Stubbs is leading the Reds in runs batted in with 19. He had one last night.

TONIGHT: Homer Bailey takes the mound against the Astros Brett Myers.

MILLION DOLLAR TALENT, TEN-CENT BRAIN: Much-traveled Milton Bradley was cut loose by the Mariners. Last week he bumped an ump, he got ejected for arguing balls and strikes, then he got booed by the home fans for dogging it. It's a snapshot of his career.

TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS: Hall of Fame manager Earl Weaver is auctioning off 47 of his most treasured keepsakes, so he can provide for his children, their children, and their children's children.  He's also worried about the collectibles being stolen before he has a chance to put them to good use.

AND IT'S BIG BUSINESS: A jersey worn by the great Lou Gehrig in 1938 was sold to SCP Auctions Monday for $329,000.

THE NBA PLAYOFFS MONDAY NIGHT: The Boston Celtics are on the ropes.  They were beaten in overtime 98 to 90 by the Miami Heat on Monday. Lebron James had 35 points and 14 rebounds as Miami took a 3-1 lead in the series. Rajon Rondo, who was playing with a brace on his dislocated left elbow had ten points and five assists for Boston.

THE GREAT LATE LATE SHOW: Oklahoma City beat Memphis 133-123 in triple overtime .  So this series is tied 2-2. A great game that didn't end until 1:40 a.m. Game five is Wednesday night.

GLAD TO SEE: North College Hill product O.J. May, who created some controversy at every stop, has become a very competent NBA player.  He's not a ballhog, in fact he seems to fit in nicely with an underrated but overperforming Grizzlies team. He was part of two state championship teams at NCH. He had four three-pointers last night and finished with 18 points, but he also did a nice job creating shots for his teammates.

COULDN'T AGREE MORE: Hall of Famer Jerry West was on the Dan Patrick Radio Show on Monday. He called the Lakers departure from the playoffs Sunday "classless."

THE NBA PLAYOFF SCHEDULE FOR TUESDAY: It's game five between the Chicago Bulls and Atlanta Hawks at 8pm on TNT.

PERSONAL OBSERVATION: Do you remember when beer ads on tv were funny and clever?  Now most of them are just plain stupid.

COLLEGE HOOPS: Carleton Scott, who torched UC in one game this season, says he'll remain in the NBA draft and will bypass his final season at Notre Dame.  Meanwhile, Maryland has hired Texas A&M coach Mark Turgeon to take over for the retired Gary Williams.  Turgeon was 97-40 in four seasons with the Aggies.

THE NHL PLAYOFFS MONDAY NIGHT: Vancouver beat Nashville to win its Western Conference semifinal series in six games. The Canucks go to the conference finals to face either San Jose or Detroit.

THE NHL PLAYOFF SCHEDULE FOR TUESDAY: It's game six between San Jose and Detroit.  The Sharks lead the series 3-2, but tonight's game is at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. 8pm on Versus.

NCAA FOR THE NORSE: The NKU womens softball team has received a berth in the NCAA Division II tournament.  The Norse will play Saginaw Valley State on Friday at the Midwest Regional in Michigan.

SCRAMBLED EGGS ANYONE? The NFL says a federal judge failed to consider all the harm that would be inflicted on team owners when she lifted football's labor lockout last month. NFL attorneys said it would be impossible to "unscramble the eggs" if the lockout is lifted and signings are allowed before a new labor deal is in place.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Longtime NFL announcer Pat Summerall is 81 today.

THE TUESDAY QUIZ: On this date in 1969, the merger between the NFL and the AFL was completed. There would be two conferences of 13 teams, the AFC and the NFC.  What three established NFL franchises moved to the AFC to complete the merger?

WHERE HAVE YOU GONE JOHNNY MCENROE? The new tennis rankings were revealed on Monday and for the first time in the 38 years of the rankings, no American man or woman is in the top ten. Mardy Fish and Andy Roddick are Nos. 11 and 12.  Serena and Venus Williams are Nos. 17 and 19.

A DAY AT THE BEACH: A member of the Austrian Olympic swim team was having some fun at Florida's Pompano Beach, spending much of Sunday digging a hole seven feet deep and six feet wide.  When he was finished, he jumped into the hole and to his surprise, the sand collapsed

around him. It took 60 rescuers two hours to free him.

DID YOU KNOW? On this date in 1967, Hank Aaron hit an inside-the-park home run. It was the only one of Aaron's 755 home runs that did not clear the fence.

THE MONDAY QUIZ: The three NFL teams that moved to the AFC were the Cleveland Browns, the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Baltimore Colts.

Tuesday is here. Enjoy yourself.
