GOODYEAR, ARIZONA - It's Sunday February 17, 2013:
AS GOOD AS IT GETS: It was 77 degrees with no clouds on Saturday for the Reds workout in Goodyear. Sunday is supposed to be a carbon copy. Get out the sunblock.
SOUNDS LIKE TEDDY BALLGAME: Jay Bruce told reporters plan and simply Saturday, "I want to be the best hitter in the game." He knows he needs consistency more than anything else.
PUT ME IN COACH: Bruce, who told Dusty Baker during the off-season that he was willing to switch from right to center field, said he believes center field is easier to play, mainly because you see the ball coming off the bat better. He thinks Shin-Soo Choo will do fine in center.
PARTNER: During fielding drills Saturday, Eric Davis was right beside Choo in center. Eric looks like he can still play.
SOMETHING TO CHOO ON: General Manager Walt Jocketty was quizzed by Korean media about his signing of Choo Saturday, and was asked about his age. "He's a young 31" said Jocketty.
MORE CHOO: Reds PR man Rob Butcher says every Reds game will be shown in South Korea, because of Choo's popularity.
OFF THE BENCH: While Ryan Ludwick is projected to be the Reds starter in left and Choo the starter in center, Dusty Baker says Chris Heisey is a very valuable member of the Reds team. "He's like a sixth man in basketball" pointed out Dusty, noting that Heisey can and probably will play all three outfield spots during the course of the season. He wishes there was a baseball award for players like Heisey, who serve that "sixth man" role.
LOOKED THE SAME TO ME: Miguel Cairo was named a special assistant to Jocketty on Thursday, but Saturday he still looked like a player. He was in full uniform and helping out infielders in various drills.
CLOSE TO THE GAME: A couple of guys who took their high school teams to state championships were at workouts on Saturday. Gary Yeats, the former Fairfield baseball coach, is at the complex everyday as part of Goodyear's support staff. Gary was named "USA Today's" Coach of the Year when he led the Indians to the state title in 1991. I also got a shout from longtime Hamilton Coach Dan Bowling, who was out watching practice. Dan had a remarkable career of 26 years with the Big Blue, in which they won a pair of state titles.
IN THE RING: Cincinnati's Adrien Broner remained undefeated with a fifth round knockout late Saturday night in Atlantic City.
ON THE MAT: Campbell County's Sean Fausz, Paul Hamilton and Austin Myers won individual titles at the Kentucky state wrestling championships on Saturday. Also winning titles were Kevin Cooper and Hiero Chamblee of Simon Kenton and Lane Jones of Walton Verona.
ON THE COURT: Dayton beat Xavier, Buffalo whipped Miami and Stetson got by NKU.
ON THE ICE: The Cyclones beat Trenton 5-2. Clones are back home to play a Monday afternoon game at US Bank Arena. Check out Cyclone Matt Macdonald, Mike Embach and Dan Eves Sunday night on Meijer Sports of all Sorts
SPEAKING OF SOAS: The bulk of Sunday's Meijer Sports of All Sorts will be devoted to Reds baseball. I have a long sit-down interview with GM Walt Jocketty.
Make Sunday special...
