AURORA, Colo. - Authorities have confirmed a Springfield, Ohio man was one of the victims killed in Friday's deadly Colorado theater shootings.
Matt McQuinn recently moved to Colorado with his girlfriend Samantha Yowler. McQuinn has now been named as one of the 12 people who lost their lives in the shooting.
Yowler, who is from St. Paris, Ohio, was also shot according to her father St. Paris Fire Chief Scott Massie.
McQuinn's family flew out to Colorado Friday afternoon when they could not get word of their son's whereabouts. His family's attorney says McQuinn died after he dove in front of Yowler, shielding her.
The Yowler and McQuinn families retained Dayton attorney Robert Scott of Oldham & Deitering to handle media questions. Scott tells 9 News Yowler is recovering at a Colorado hospital with a gunshot wound to the knee. Most of her family flew to Colorado to be by her side. Her brother Nick also lives in Colorado and was at the movie theatre with the couple at the time of the shooting. The two men tried to shield Samantha during the shooting rampage according to Scott. He said the families plan to release a statement on Saturday afternoon.
Aspiring sportscaster Jessica Ghawi as well as Alex Sullivan died in the shooting. Sullivan's family says he was at the theater celebrating his 27th birthday.
Another Ohio man, Gage Hankins, 18, was also injured during the deadly rampage but is expected to recover. The northern Ohio native was shot in the arm.
Many families continue to wait hours as police continue to investigate the shooting and notify relatives of the status of their loved ones.
