CINCINNATI - Scoring is usually pretty cut and dried in sports: 3-2, 21-17, 106-97 read the finals in baseball, football and basketball for instance.
What do the box scores look like though, when the daily World Choir Games results are compiled?
And we thought that scoring figure skating was subjective.
Presumably it is good marketing to attach the term "games" to the gathering in Cincinnati, so as to impart urgency, if not a sense of nationalism to the proceedings.
Be assured though, that there is more of a connection between singers and swingers than we might suspect.
For every accomplished bass who'd love to be a ballplayer, there are a thousand more jocks who would die to hit a high "C" over a three pointer.
There has been sniping from some quarters about the World Choir Games being a little corny and somehow less than it was billed.
But if kids breaking into song on a street corner rather than into the corner liquor store is corny, I'll have a bunch more.
Cincinnati has welcomed the world over the years in figure skating, gymnastics and tennis. We know how to do it and I have every confidence that we'll do it well.
