When one begins to drink alcohol for the first time in one’s life, there are some common tendencies in which we tend to engage. Perfectly acceptable beer means a 24-pack of Pabst Blue Ribbon paid with quarters and singles, and one’s idea of “drinking whisky” means mixing something akin to an overly generous pour of Old Grand-Dad combined with some stale Coke.

As our taste buds and overall sense of maturity heightens, however, we realize we’ve been missing out an entire art form. The Southgate House Revival’s Rye Whiskey Tasting is a fine way to introduce you to tumblers instead of red Solo cups, and whet your palette with the staff’s well-rounded selection of six rye whiskeys, including Bulleit Rye, Knob Creek Rye, Rye One, Rittenhouse Rye, Wild Turkey Rye and Whistle Pig Rye. Designated driver not included. 21 and up. $15. 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10. Southgate House Revival, 111 E. Sixth St., Newport. 859-431-2201, southgatehouse.com .
