“I was a funny kid that enjoyed comedy,” explains Kyle Grooms, “but I never thought of comedy as a job. We had Richard Pryor and Eddie Murphy, but it was like they came from outer space.” It was after watching Def Comedy Jam that Grooms realized regular folks could do stand-up. So he left his job as a graphic artist at Univision to pursue comedy full-time.

In addition to stand-up, Grooms has done some acting and currently co-hosts Hick-Hop Radio with fellow comic Dustin Chafin, which streams live at PNCRadio.fm . It’s also available as a podcast.

“He’s a redneck from Texas, I’m a Hip-Hop guy from New Jersey, and we talk about whatever the hot topics are or comedy from our different perspectives.”

These days, Grooms on stage is into telling longer stories about the things going on in his personal life. And there’s that spot-on Obama impression. “I don’t like to do that too much, because people always cheer for it. I want them to like my regular comedy better.” $8-$14. Through Sunday, Feb. 24. Go Bananas Comedy Club, 8410 Market Place Lane, Montgomery. 513-984-9288, gobananascomedy.com .
