Idol winner Phillip Phillips to undergo kidney surgery next week

AMERICAN IDOL winner PHILLIP PHILLIPS' victory celebrations will be cut short - the singer is undergoing surgery next week (beg28May12) to address kidney problems that have dogged him throughout his stint on the TV talent show.

Phillips, who beat Jessica Sanchez to become the winner of the 11th season of the show on Wednesday night (23May12), was hospitalized shortly after making it to the finals - but fought through the pain and discomfort to compete.

He has now pulled out of a series of planned promotional appearances following his big win to undergo surgery.

He says, "I've been sick this whole show... It's been tough. I've had a lot of great people around me, great doctors. That helps out a lot.... (but) I'm ready to feel better, feel like myself."
