The people living in and around Owensville in Clermont County are well-prepared for most emergencies.

However, even they were caught up in the rush to buy supplies Tuesday as Mother Nature unleashed freezing rain on the Tri-state.

At the Owensville IGA, owner Denny Brown spent part of the afternoon restocking shelves with popular items like milk, bread and ground beef.

"People go crazy when it's time to get trapped at home," he said.

Amy Meyer, of Williamsburg, was in the checkout line with those items and many more.

"I decided to get out and stock up now because I'm hearing it's going to get worse," she said.

Down the street at Shumard Hardware, supplies were running low on two winter staples – snow shovels and salt.

Owner Phil Shumard put out the last of his snow shovel stock and hauled the last pallet of salt from the warehouse to the showroom floor.

"I tried to buy more from our supplier and they're out, he said," Shumard said. "I might not get more until next week."

One of his customers Tuesday afternoon was Tom Handra, of Edenton.

"I had to get some Gumout for my snow blower – I couldn't get it started – and had to get a back of salt," Handra said.

What does he think of this new wave of winter weather?

Echoing the likely sentiments of many other Tri-state residents, he laughed and said, "I could do without it."
